A man convicted last month for the murder of a misbehaving motorcycle-club visitor received a statutory 18 years to life in prison Thursday morning.
Judge Lori Olender said in Lucas County Common Pleas Court that while Ohio law gave her little leeway in sentencing DeAndre Koonce, 30, of the 1800 block of Airport Highway, for the March 3, 2024, shooting death of Caprise Arnett, it provided “the right outcome when you take a life and there is absolutely no reason behind it.”
While Arnett, 34, may have “acted the fool” inside the illegal after-hours club on Belmont Avenue, the judge said, his behavior did not warrant being shot.
“That whole thing happened so fast,” Judge Olender said, referring to surveillance footage of the conflict from multiple cameras inside the club that was shown during Koonce’s trial late last month. “It seemed to me the bar had it taken care of.”
