Bears and motorcycles do not really mix. That was already on my mind after our Tennessee motorcycle trip for the 2026 Smoky Mountain H.O.G. Rally, when a relaxing ride on the Foothills Parkway turned into a close wildlife encounter with a black bear and three cubs.

When I say close, I mean close. The bears were no more than about 24 inches away as we rode by. If the momma bear had reacted toward the bike, I doubt I would have had much time to do anything except hang on and hope for the best.

Video: Dirt Bike Rider Hits a Bear

The video below shows how fast a motorcycle wildlife encounter can go wrong. A black bear bolts across the trail, the rider has almost no reaction time, and suddenly the rider and the bear have their own very real close encounter.

What Our Foothills Parkway Bear Encounter Taught Me

Our own bear encounter happened on pavement, not dirt, but the lesson is the same: wildlife can appear instantly. On a motorcycle, there is no windshield, no crumple zone, and very little room for error. A bear, deer, turkey, dog, or any other animal can turn a perfect scenic ride into a problem before your brain has finished processing what it saw.

That is one reason I like writing ride reports from real trips. Roads like the Foothills Parkway, Tail of the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, Back of the Dragon, and Devils Triangle are incredible motorcycle destinations, but they are still mountain roads. Beautiful scenery, blind corners, shadows, traffic, and wildlife are all part of the same package.

Motorcycle Wildlife Safety Reminders

  • Scan both sides of the road, not just the lane directly ahead.
  • Be extra alert near woods, water, overlooks, pull-offs, and dawn or dusk riding conditions.
  • Slow down when visibility is limited by curves, shade, brush, traffic, or roadside distractions.
  • If one animal crosses, expect another animal to follow.
  • Leave extra space in group rides so every rider has room to react.
  • Do not assume a wild animal will keep moving in the same direction
